At present, James is a consultant ophthalmologist at Wellington and Hutt Public Hospitals. He has played a pivotal role in devising medical retinal treatment protocols and helped establish a satellite intravitreal injection service at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.
His main passion in the practice of ophthalmology is in the utilisation of state-of-the-art ophthalmic multimodal imaging. With multimodal imaging, he is able to provide the highest standard of individualised care for patients with inherited or acquired medical retinal conditions, and glaucoma. During his time as a registrar, he helped to set up the Wellington regional retinal imaging and angiography service.
James is also a highly-experienced cataract surgeon. He uses sutureless, microincisional phaco-chop techniques. These techniques are widely regarded as the safest and most gentle surgical methods to help patients achieve their best visual potential. His surgical philosophy is minimalist and pragmatic. He prioritises longevity of good quality vision over short-term benefits. This is particularly important for cataract patients who have co-existing eye disease, such as medical retinal conditions or glaucoma.
